2007 OPEN AND U21 INTER AREA CHAMPIONSHIP

20 / 21 January 2007
Deeside Leisure Centre

The 2007 Inter Area championship welcomed Area Teams to Deeside Leisure Centre for a weekend of top quality netball. It was a chilly day but the atmosphere was soon warmed as the U21, Open 2 and Open 1 teams competed in the exciting first rounds. Close matches between Dyfed & Cardiff and District in Open 1 and South East versus North East in the U21 competition left all Area Teams thinking that they could take the title on Sunday.

The Inter Area gave way in the afternoon for the International match between Wales and South Africa. The match was closely watched by the Inter Area players looking for inspiration for their final rounds the next day. The Welsh team put in a strong performance but unfortunately were unable to steal a win; Final score 42-45.

Sunday morning the courts were cleared and prepared for the final day of the 2007 Inter Area Championship. The International players took their places in their Area teams and were ready to take on the days challenges. The final ‘crunch’ fixtures took to the court and the spectators gathered to see who was going to emerge as winners.

The weekend’s Round Robin championships came to a close with Glamorgan Valleys U21 team claiming an undefeated run through the competition and South East clinching the Runner’s Up place. In the Open 2 Cardiff & District and North East entered the final fixture with wins behind them. It was a closely contended match but Cardiff & District pulled away to win 29-22. With the atmosphere building the Open 1 teams stepped on to the courts, North East versus Cardiff & District and Dyfed versus South East. North East, the reigning champions, won the championship convincingly with Dyfed defeating South East to claim 2nd place.

Although the event took place with a reduced number of entries the standard of Netball did not suffer. I would like to thank those Areas that entered and supported the 2007 Inter Area Championship. I would also like to thank the volunteers and staff who were involved in making the weekend a great success.

I wish you all every success for the remainder of the season and look forward to seeing you all representing your clubs in the National Championship later in the year.
