UMPIRING QUALIFICATIONS

To obtain the various Umpiring Awards, applicants must attend the WNA umpiring course appropriate to test applied for (or IFNA equivalent) and must be affiliated to the WNA

"Q" Award

This award is not a qualification it is a familiarisation course for beginners and novices.

The award covers the following:

- Basic introduction to umpiring including explanation and understanding of the rules.

- Clarification of the lines that umpires run.

- Fitness standards for umpires.

- It also answers all your questions regarding umpiring.

- You will also receive a Welsh Netball rules book and Q pack when you undertake the course.

Award details

*The course is 4 hours long and attendance at all 4 hours is compulsory.

* All courses close a month in advance of the starting date therefore please ensure you send in your booking form and payment to Welsh Netball in no less than a month before the courrse is due to start. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE.

*Community chest grants are available, please contact your local NDO or loacal authority for more information.

Entry Requirment

- You must be at least 14 years of age to attend the Q Award course

- During the course you will be expected to take part in the practical game of netball

- Bring a whistle, hairband/elastic band and a pen to the course.

FENA "C" Award

This is the first step on the umpire qualification ladder.

The "C" Award includes the following:
Practical assessment: A 30+ minute test
Theory assessment: A 30 minute written paper of 25 questions to be completed before the day of your practical assessment- pass mark section 1 -17 out of 20 and section 2 7 out of 10.
Fitness assessment: bleep test level 4.5.

Please note Theory and Fitness assessments are conducted by your local NDO's at four set times in a year.

Welsh Netball offer a level 1 umpire course to enable potential umpires to start the process of becoming a IFNA "C" Award umpire.

The course includes theory and practical elements, including a detailed understanding of the rules and umpire protocols that all qualified umpires must adhere to.

The level 1 course is a 6 hour course and all 6 hours are compulsory, the course is run over 1 day and you will be expected to umpire within this course and also take part in a practical playing session.

Entry Requirment

- You must be at least 16 years of age

- You must have undertaken a Welsh Netball Q Award course

-You must have a good knowledge of the game of netball and show a good understanding of the rules

- During the course you will be expected to take part in the practical game of netball

- Bring a whistle, hairband/elastic band and a pen to the course.

FENA "B" Award

The IFNA "B" Award is the second step on the umpire ladder for experienced "C" umpires that want to progress further.

The Test involves the following:
Practical Assessment: A 60 minute test
Theory Assessment: An oral test of 10 questions. Pass mark 7 out of 10
Fitness Assessment: bleep test level 6.5
From September 2013 the structure will change to the following:
Theory Assessment: A combined A and B paper will be held at central venues one in North Wales, one in South Wales and one in West Wales three times a year in the months of February, May and November. It will be a 90 minute paper containing a total of 20 questions. The pass marks will be as follows: section 1 22 marks and section 2 18 marks. Once pass marks have been met a candidate can then move on to their practical assessment.

Welsh Netball offer a level 2 umpire course to enable high level "C" award umpires to progress onto the IFNA "B" Award umpire.

The course includes theory and practical elements, including an indepth understanding of the rules and umpire protocols that all international qualified umpires must adhere to.

The level 2 course is a 8 hour course and all 8 hours are compulsory, the course is run over 1 day and you will be expected to umpire within this course and also take part in a practical playing session.

Entry Requirments

- Applicants must hold a "C" award qualification

- You must be at least 18 years of age

- During the course you will be expected to take part in the practical game of netball

- Bring a whistle, hairband/elastic band and a pen to the course.

FENA "A" Award
Applicants must be holders of the "B" Award (or IFNA equivalent).
Candidates must be recommended by their Area, Regional Development Officer or National Association
Fitness Assessment: Bleep test level 8.5
Theory Assessment: A 90 minute theory paper will be sat which contains 20 questions, the pass mark are set at section 1 27 marks and section 2 25 marks. Once these pass marks have been obtained the a candidate can progress on to their practical assessment. The assessments will be held in central venues one in North Wales, one in South Wales and one in West Wales three times a year in the months of February, May and November.
Practical: A 60 minute umpiring test.
