Eighth ranked Wales entered the contest with the 18th-ranked Zambian Chipolopolo as favourites and didn’t disappoint their loyal fans with a 71-44 victory over the African nation. Wales breathing fire on way to World Cup

Trish Wilcox believes her Welsh netball side “are in a great position” as they prepare to go to Sydney to launch their World Cup campaign against Fiji on Friday.

Elite performance director Wilcox was speaking after watching her side completely dominate a Tassie Spirit team that had beaten Scotland last week to make it two wins out of three in their warm-up matches in Tasmania.

“The progression made in a short space of time has been great and it has been good to get all 12 players on court in these games,” said Wilcox after the resounding 62-39 win over the local side.

“Everyone is pushing for a starting place, which is great, and we have learned we are competitive as a squad of 12. Going into a tournament that last 10 days that’s a great position to be in.

“The time we’ve spent in Tasmania has been really important for our preparation for Sydney. It’s really special for us to be able to come to the country that is the number one in the world and to see the atmosphere that is already building.

“We feel very privileged to be here. The people that we have come across are quite passionate about their sport and everybody has been wishing us luck - we feel like we have got some great support.”

Building on their win over the Scottish Thistles on Saturday night, 45-36, Suzy Drane’s team dominated from start to finish against Tassie Spirit, who had been beaten 64-35 to the Australian Netball Centre of Excellence before recovering to beat the Scots in the quadrangular tournament.

Wales went down 54-42 to the young Aussies in their first outing before picking up two morale boosting wins to take with them on their journey to Sydney this week. They were 17-12 ahead at the end of the first quarter, led 32-23 at half-time.

They then put in a powerful third quarter in which they outscored Tassie Spirit by 18 goals to nine. The final quarter ended 12-7 in favour of Drane’s side to give them a victory by 23 goals in the end.

Having spent the past eight days in Tasmania, Wales will now move on to Sydney where they will meet Fiji in the opening game of the Netball World Cup at the Allphones Arena in Sydney’s Olympic Park on Friday. The venue has a capacity of 16,500 and organisers are expecting big crowds.

“Out time in Tasmania has helped us to get an idea of the hype and build-up to the World Cup, mainly because netball is so big in the southern hemisphere,” said Welsh skipper, Drane.

“It has been good for us as a team to see what that hype is going to be like on a smaller scale before we get to Sydney, where it will be through the roof in terms of what we are used to.

“We’ve had an increased amount of coverage of our sport in Wales, but we are still low on spectators with anywhere between 500-1000 at our Superleague games with the Celtic Dragons. The coverage of female sport has got better and this tournament has come at the right time.

“As soon as we set off from Cardiff we knew we had the opportunity to almost live like professional athletes for a short period of time. Out task now is to make sure we can do the job as professionals.”

Wilcox & Wales Warming up for Netball World Cup

Trish Wilcox has travelled half-way around the world and back again to take Wales to the Netball World Cup and on Friday (31 July) preparations for the tournament will take a massive step-up.

Having signed-off their domestic build-up with a friendly fixture against England, Wilcox’ new-look Welsh side face three games in a week in their training camp in Tasmania ahead of their tournament opener against Fiji in Sydney on 7 August.

First-up this week will be some of the rising stars of Australian netball who will be playing for the Australian Netball Centre of Excellence. Scotland follow and then the preparations will end with a game against home side, Tassie Spirit.

Wales are ranked eighth going into the World Cup and the challenge ahead of Wilcox and her squad is the most exciting and challenging of their careers. A top-two finish in their Group, which also includes Uganda and Zambia, will see them move into the battle for a top eight place, with games the best teams in the world.

“I’m very excited about taking this team into the Netball World Cup. They have worked so hard and done everything that has been asked of them. The best part will be seeing what we can achieve,” said the Gorseinon-born Wilcox.

“Up until the time we left Heathrow Airport on Friday, 24 July, the majority of the girls had been working more, rather than less, in their day jobs to clear the way for the trip. We have to remember they all have full-time jobs and they have been under immense pressure.

“We’ve got a good build-up in Tasmania with three tough matches and the pre-tournament camp gives us the chance to take away any distractions. The games will allow us to put into practice what we have been doing in training.”

Having learned to play netball at Penyrheol Comprehensive School, played for West Glamorgan and had a Welsh trial at 15, Wilcox headed to London before seeking a new life in New Zealand.

That was 21 years ago and, in that time, she became one of the most respected netball coaches in the country, leading the Netball New Zealand’s community plan in the northern zone from her Auckland base.

Prior to that she acted as the national coach for the Cooks Islands in 2014 and led the Samoan Under 21 team to their highest placing at the World Youth Championships in Glasgow.

“I left Wales 21 years ago and headed to Auckland. I loved my time in New Zealand - it is a wonderful place and a beautiful country. It’s all about people and all about culture,” said Wilcox.

“If you have a positive mindset it is a place that enables you to grow. I started in coaching when I was there and I was encouraged to to go further.

“I certainly learned a lot of life skills out there and the timing was right to come home,.”

Wilcox returned to Wales in November to take up the role as Head of Elite Performance at Welsh Netball. She guided the Celtic Dragons through their Superleague season and then coached the Welsh team at Netball Europe.

Now she is taking the Welsh team into a global tournament with the chance of taking on the best teams in the world.

“It is a real privilege to be coaching Wales and it is great to be coaching a team going to the World Cup,” said dedicated Scarlets rugby fan Wilcox.

“We have made this tournament all about performance. Once you start thinking about numbers or targets you can lose focus, so it really will be a case of taking each game at a time and keeping everyone in the moment.

“I want to see these girls perform to their full potential and put everything they’ve got out on the court. I don’t want anyone to be leaving the World Cup with any regrets.

“The Celtic Dragons season was a transitional one with different players and a new coach going through a rebuilding phase. But by the end of the season we could all see the progress that had been made.”

The extent of Welsh progress will be revealed over the course of the next three weeks at the World Cup.

Alun has enjoyed his time with Welsh Netball and I would like to thank him on behalf of the board for his contribution and Welsh Netball look forward to working with Alun on special projects in the future. Wales Open Squad ready for Belfast

After completing thorough and intense preparations over recent weeks, the Wales Netball Open squad travel to Antrim, Belfast this week to compete at a very challenging Netball Europe (14-17 May).  Netball Europe is an opportunity for Wales to pit their talents against some of the world’s best before  all focus turns to the Netball World Championships in Australia this coming August.

The squad of 12 players selected for Netball Europe, will experience an intense few days that include games against Northern Ireland, Trinidad & Tobago, South Africa, England, Scotland.  This is a gruelling event that will see teams playing matches on each day of the 4-day tournament as well as a double header day where teams will play two rivals in one day.  This is sure to test the mantle and endurance for each team and in particular Wales who will face England and South Africa on Saturday 16 May.  Wales start their campaign off against Northern Ireland on the opening day, and then face Trinidad and Tobago on Friday and round off the tournament on Sunday with what will be a tough match versus Celtic Rivals, Scotland.

Trish Wilcox, Head Coach is looking forward to the tournament and says:

‘We are all looking forward to the Netball Europe competition, and the challenges it presents the players and management. It will be a great opportunity to face the calibre of the teams we will play at the tournament and great preparation for the upcoming World Cup in August’.

Wales secure 3rd in U17's Netball Europe

Wales U17's recently took part in U17 Netball Europe championships held in Hull last weekend. Wales took to the court against Scotland in their opening game and after a close and tense encounter which saw Wales up 19-16 at half time but eventually narrowly losing by 41-35. Next up on Saturday 7th March Wales bounced back to come out on top winning 46 – 37 against Northern Ireland. The final game of the weekend saw us take on England on Sunday afternoon. This encounter was always going to be difficult with England undefeated so far. Our players gave it everything with passages of play that definitely made England work hard for their victory, the final score line showing an England win 77 - 24.

Wales securing a 3rd place finish in this year’s U17 Netball Europe championships, well done to all players and Management involved.

Netball November

Remember, remember Netball November…

Welsh Netball is presenting Netball November for the first time. During the month of November we are re-creating the calendar to become as netball focussed as possible hosting twenty two Local Authority events and eight regional events across Wales within the thirty days of November.

Netball November is to be used as a platform for all of the Welsh Netball family to come together in raising awareness for our game and providing new opportunities.

We understand that as an organisation there is much work to do. However, there is also not enough recognition of the great work that takes place week in week out, on and off the court by our committed Welsh Netball family. Netball November is our time to congratulate one another and continue to build upon the great work in order to; promote existing netball events, develop new netball opportunities and provide new exit routes to make netball a sustainable sport.

You can join in the fun by sharing; what is happening in your area, club, school, organisation by hash tagging #netballnovember and/or contacting your Regional Netball Development Officer for more information.

You can see what's happening on our Facebook page - Welsh Netball or Twitter - @WelshNetball

West Wales Secure Sponsorship

West Wales Netball have received a fantastic sponsorship offer from Burns Pet Nutrition Company who have bought brand new kit for our players from U13s all the way through to Seniors.

The kit was designed and made by Manhattan Marketing of Llanelli, Burns Pet Company very kindly agreed to pay for 60 dresses and 4 sets of patch bibs.

The new playing kit was worn for the first time by our squads at the Welsh Netball HUB Tournament Weekend as part of Gemau Cymru.

Founder & owner of Burns Pet Nutrition, John Burns kindly agreed to join us for some photos of the new kit – but went the extra mile and donned a West Wales playing dress just for us J what a great sport.

This playing kit is a first for a long time in West Wales, previously squads have borrowed club & schools kit in order to attend tournaments – the girls were very proud to wear their own playing kit and represent their region thanks to Burns Pet Nutrition.

A huge *Thank You* goes to John and Burns Pet Nutrition for their support of West Wales Netball – We really appreciate it .

As Suzy Drane stepped out on court last night for her 50th Cap at Sport Wales National Centre, Cardiff it was exactly 50 games ago she stepped out at the same venue to play Jamaica for her country back in June 2005.

Suzy has played in 5 Netball Europe’s (FENA), 1 Commonwealth Games in Australia, 1 World Championships in Singapore, 1 Nations Cup in Singapore, 1 Cooks Island Tri Series in Raratonga and other international fixtures. Suzy has fought back from being de-selected from the senior team to not only becoming a consistent top seven player but also the Captains role.

Suzy is an inspirational role model for all young Welsh netball players and we are very proud of her. Here's to another 50 caps!

Congratulations also to Sara Hale (Co-Captain), who gained her 80th Cap in last nights game.
